Baby’s nasal mucosa is thin and tender. When sick or stimulated by external stimuli, it is easy to cause congestion, edema and secretion of nasal mucosa. Plus the baby’s nasal cavity is very narrow, a little secretion will cause nasal congestion. As the baby can only breathe with the nose, once the nasal cavity is blocked, it will produce obvious snoring sound.
Some milk will return to the back of the nasal cavity when the baby is suckling or after sucking, which will also cause a large amount of secretions in the nasal cavity. At this time, if the indoor temperature is too high and the relative humidity is low, the secretions in the baby’s nasal cavity will become more dry, forming a harder callus, which is more difficult to discharge from the nasal cavity.
When baby’s nose is blocked, it will affect breathing and sleep. How can we help baby relieve the symptom of nose blockage? Experts remind parents that different ways can be taken to relieve the baby’s nasal congestion according to different conditions.
If the baby only has a stuffy nose and no obvious runny nose symptoms, you can rub your hands together to raise the temperature of your hands, or use hot water bags, hot water bottles and other tools to warm your hands and cover your baby’s head; you can also put a small hat on your baby. After a period of time, the baby’s nasal congestion can be improved.
If the baby has a stuffy nose with runny nose, and the runny nose in the nasal cavity can’t be drained, steam bath can be given to the baby’s nose. You can soak a small towel in hot water and squeeze out most of the water. Fold the towel and put it in front of the baby’s nose. In this way, the steam can enter the baby’s nose. After a few minutes, the baby will be able to run out of snot, and then use the nasal aspirator to suck each nostril 1-2 times.
Steam bath is safe, but it can’t last too long. It’s better to control it for 10-15 minutes each time. It should be noted that do not let hot water directly contact the baby’s skin to avoid scalding. Humidifiers and sprayers have the same principle as steam baths, but the effect is slightly weaker.
If the nasal mucus in the nasal cavity is thick or has formed a hard callus. In this case, spray some liquid in the baby’s nasal cavity, such as normal saline, breast milk or drop a little vegetable oil. After a period of time, the secretions in the nasal cavity can be softened, discharged when the baby sneezes, or naturally drained after softening. Never use tools or fingers to dig your baby’s nostrils, so as not to hurt the baby’s nasal mucosa and cause accidental injury.
When the baby’s nose is blocked, it’s better to take good care of the blocked nasal cavity before feeding the baby. When feeding, you can let the baby take a rest for a while, so as not to block the mouth and nose completely for a long time and affect the normal breathing of the baby. If the baby’s nasal congestion is serious, it is difficult to breathe and the breathing speed is increased, it is necessary to go to the hospital in time.
